Behind the Design

The Sokuryou Yacho (literally "surveying field notebook") was first developed by KOKUYO for use at surveying and archaeological excavation sites, where there is no desk and no time to set things down. The hard cover doubles as a writing board, and the compact size means it disappears into a jacket pocket or bag.

More than 60 years after its debut, the notebook has travelled well beyond its original context. The light grey 3mm grid was chosen specifically to guide handwriting, graphs, and tables without overwhelming the page visually when you return to review notes. The acid-free inner paper ensures that those notes last. The colourway options, from clean white to high-visibility yellow, were introduced so the notebook works as naturally in a meeting room or on a commute as it does on a construction site.

Originally designed for surveyors and field workers, this compact hardcover notebook has been in production for over 60 years. It fits in one hand, writes without a desk, and uses a light grey 3mm grid that guides your writing without cluttering the page when you read back through it.
