Tombow's Irojiten series has long been known for its distinctive color naming system, drawing each hue's name from the natural world rather than generic descriptors. Colors like Shikon (Gromwell Purple) and Uguisu-iro (Bush Warbler Green) tell you something about the shade's character before you even uncap it.

In 2026, Tombow extended the Irojiten line into watercolor pencils. The 36-color palette was built specifically around plants and Japanese scenery, including light and bright tones that are difficult to achieve by mixing standard pigments. The watercolor core is formulated for strong color development when wet, allowing the pencil lines to dissolve into washes, blend with adjacent colors, or be layered once dry.
