Behind the Design

Lokta paper has been made in Nepal for over a thousand years, produced from the bark of the lokta shrub that grows in Himalayan forests above 1,600 meters. Because each sheet is beaten and dried by hand, the texture, weight, and fiber pattern shift slightly from piece to piece. Amina Collection Co., Ltd. sources this paper and works with Nepalese craftspeople to produce the Chaikhana calendar series, where "chaikhana" refers to a tea house or resting place along a journey.

The 2027 edition follows Okaka, a cat on a perpetual journey, illustrated across twelve monthly scenes. Each scene hides five differences for the viewer to find, turning a standard calendar page into a small monthly puzzle. The combination of the tactile lokta surface and the illustrated puzzles gives the calendar a character distinct from mass-printed paper products.
