Behind the Design

Washi presents a specific adhesive challenge: it is thin, fibrous, and highly absorbent, meaning standard glues cause it to warp, fray, or tear on contact. Yamato developed the W-100 to address exactly this. Rather than a synthetic polymer base, the formula uses tapioca starch, a natural ingredient with a long history in Japanese paper conservation and crafts.

The result is a paste that spreads evenly across delicate washi surfaces without saturating the fibers or distorting the sheet. It is intended for washi crafts and chiyogami work, where precision and clean adhesion matter. The faint Japanese fragrance is a deliberate detail, a nod to traditional paste-making rather than the chemical smell of synthetic adhesives.

Most glues damage washi by causing fraying or warping from moisture, so Yamato made one specifically for it. The W-100 is a tapioca starch-based paste that bonds delicate Japanese paper without distorting it, and it even carries a faint traditional Japanese fragrance.
