Lokta paper has been made in Nepal for over a thousand years. The raw material is the bark of the Daphne plant, which grows in Himalayan forests at high altitude. Artisans hand-press the pulp into sheets and dry them in the sun, producing a paper with a fibrous, slightly translucent quality that absorbs pigment differently than conventional paper.

The Tribal Animals calendar was developed by Chaikhane under Amina Collection Co., Ltd. as part of a line that pairs traditional Nepali papermaking with bold graphic illustration. The tribal patterns layered across each animal are drawn with fine, interlocking lines meant to suggest movement and energy. The result sits somewhere between folk art and modern graphic design.

Because the paper is hand-pressed and the calendars assembled by individual craftspeople, each one carries minor variations in tone and texture. Amina treats this as part of the object rather than a flaw.
