Behind the Design

The True Ruler started as an entry in the Kokuyo Design Award, a competition that regularly surfaces ideas that challenge the basic assumptions behind everyday tools. The premise here is deceptively simple: a conventional ruler marks its scale with printed or engraved lines, but any line drawn on a surface has a measurable width. That width, however small, means the measurement you read is an approximation.

The True Ruler solves this by rethinking what a scale marking is. Instead of printing a line, the ruler creates a series of equally spaced surfaces at slightly different heights. The boundary where two adjacent surfaces meet is the scale marking. That boundary has no width in the geometric sense, so there is no ambiguity about where to align your pencil or read your measurement.

The result is a 0.5mm-thick stainless steel ruler that looks minimal and functions with a precision that its plain appearance understates.

A conventional ruler marks measurements with printed lines that have physical thickness, which introduces a small but real margin of error. The True Ruler replaces those lines with the boundaries between raised and recessed surfaces, so the measurement point is a geometric edge with no width at all.
