Echizen Washi originates from Fukui Prefecture and has been produced for over 1,000 years, earning recognition as one of Japan's most distinguished traditional papers. MIDORI chose this material not as a decorative nod to heritage, but because its fibrous texture and absorbency respond to silk screen ink in ways that mass-produced paper cannot replicate, producing colors that appear matte, layered, and tactile.

The sushi theme follows a seasonal logic: each month's topping corresponds to what is actually at peak in Japan during that time, from firefly squid in March to crab in November. The white of the shari (rice) is produced using a specially formulated Echizen Washi rather than white ink, which allows the paper itself to carry that element of the illustration. Sushi designs are redrawn each year, so returning buyers see entirely new compositions. The tall, narrow scroll format keeps the footprint minimal on any wall. Each sheet also includes short ingredient trivia in both Japanese and English, making this a piece that communicates across language barriers.
