Hajime Okamoto is a sumi-e (ink wash) artist whose round, contented cat character "Kabamaru" has become a fixture in Japanese stationery and calendar culture. Sumi-e is a monochrome brush technique rooted in East Asian painting traditions, and Okamoto's take on it is deliberately soft and humorous: Kabamaru wears expressions of sleepy satisfaction and mild bewilderment that land differently depending on the day's proverb beneath it.
