Behind the Design

Echizen, a city in Fukui Prefecture, has produced washi paper for over a thousand years. The craft survived because the paper it produces is exceptional: dense, smooth, and visually rich in a way that machine-made paper cannot replicate. MIDORI commissions a fresh batch of Echizen Washi specifically for this calendar each year, meaning the paper itself is part of the design, not just a substrate.

The Seasonal Patterns (Fuuryuu) series draws on Japanese folk motifs tied to each month: Daruma in February, carp climbing a waterfall in May, goldfish and glass marbles in July, a yuzu bath in December. Silk screen printing suits this format well because it sits on the surface of the paper rather than sinking into it, letting the texture of the washi remain visible beneath the ink. Gold silk accents appear at points throughout the year to mark moments of particular significance.

For the 2027 edition, MIDORI moved from the hand-torn edge finish used in previous years to a clean cut, and added a punched hole with a cord for hanging. The calendar is available in two sizes, S and L, both using the same washi and printing process.

Each sheet of this wall calendar is printed on Echizen Washi, a Japanese paper tradition stretching back over a thousand years, with silk screen printing applied by hand each year on paper made exclusively for this calendar. The 2027 edition moves to a clean cut finish and adds a hanging cord, with gold silk accent printing woven into twelve monthly motifs drawn from Japanese seasonal life.
