PERPANEP started from a single question: what does the paper actually feel like under the pen? KOKUYO developed three distinct base papers, each named for its tactile character. "Smooth" sits at the frictionless end of the spectrum, engineered for fountain pens and gel pens where ink flow and shading expression are the whole point. The surface is smooth enough that ink spreads cleanly, making shading and line variation immediately visible.

The German binding was chosen to complement this. Unlike a standard sewn-bound notebook, German binding uses a hard cover attached only at the spine, so the book opens completely flat from page one without any break-in period and no gap at the gutter. The cover can fold fully behind the book, giving you a rigid backing when writing on a single open page. At 15mm thick with 96 sheets, it stays slim enough to carry easily without sacrificing page count.
