Behind the Design

Mino washi is one of Japan's oldest papermaking traditions, originating in Gifu Prefecture and designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The rakusui technique used here involves dripping water onto the freshly formed paper sheet before it dries, leaving a scattered dot pattern that resembles delicate lacework when held to the light.

The Okashi na Doubutsu Kobo series pairs this refined paper craft with illustrated animal characters in whimsical, storybook-style scenes. Vol. 3 introduces four new characters: a cream-colored seal, a bird dressed for an occasion, a panda at rest, and a cat up to something. Each design is sold as a separate set, so the paper and its character are matched from the start.

A Mino washi letter set from the third collection of the beloved Okashi na Doubutsu Kobo series. The writing paper uses rakusui paper, a traditional Japanese technique that creates a lace-like watermark texture across the sheet, giving each letter a quiet elegance beneath the playful animal illustrations.
