Behind the Design

Nengajō, Japan's New Year's postcard tradition, dates back over a thousand years and remains one of the most widely observed customs in the country. Japan Post delivers hundreds of millions of these cards each January 1st, and the official lottery ticket printed on each card is part of what keeps the tradition alive: recipients can check their numbers against nationally announced winning combinations for prizes ranging from stamps to home appliances.

This 2027 collection from RYU-RYU is built around the Year of the Goat (sheep), weaving zodiac imagery into both playful illustrated designs and more traditional red-and-white compositions. The twelve designs cover a wide tonal range, from loose hand-lettered sheep characters to formal sho-chiku-bai (pine, bamboo, and plum) arrangements and shimenawa rope decorations associated with Shinto shrines at New Year.

Japanese nengajō postcards for the 2027 Year of the Goat ready to send to family and friends. Every card carries an official otoshidama lottery ticket, a tradition unique to Japan Post's New Year's mail system. Twelve designs range from sheep characters to classic motifs like Mt. Fuji, kagami mochi, and shimenawa rope decorations.
