The Moon and Calendar Wall Calendar grew out of the long-running "Moon and Calendar Day-by-Day" series, which built its following by reconnecting readers with the traditional Japanese way of marking time. Rather than the purely numerical grid of a Western calendar, this one layers three overlapping systems: the waxing and waning of the moon, the old lunar calendar dates, and the 24 solar terms (二十四節気) that divide the year by the sun's position.

Those 24 solar terms, names like Risshun (start of spring) and Taisetsu (heavy snow), were once the practical backbone of agricultural and daily life in Japan.
