Behind the Design

Standard pencils are designed for handwriting and drawing, but hard pen calligraphy demands something different. The controlled pressure, deliberate stroke direction, and expressive line variation of 硬筆書道 (hard pen calligraphy) put unique stress on the lead, and a thin or brittle core simply breaks under that use.

Tombow developed the MONO Calligraphy Pencil around a high-density ultra-fine particle core at 3mm diameter, wider than a typical pencil core, to give calligraphy students and practitioners the weight and responsiveness needed to vary line thickness naturally. The dense structure keeps the lead from crumbling mid-stroke while still depositing dark, consistent marks on paper. The 4B and 6B grades cover a range from controlled dark lines to expressive, heavy strokes.

A pencil built specifically for hard pen calligraphy, with a 3mm high-density core that writes dark and holds up to the pressure needed to shape clean tome, hane, and harai strokes. Available in 4B and 6B, each box contains 12 pencils.
