Behind the Design

Mino Washi is a papermaking tradition from Gifu Prefecture with over 1,300 years of history, designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The paper is known for its soft surface and subtle texture, distinct from standard machine-made paper.

Furukawashiko applied this traditional material to a pochi envelope, the small envelope used in Japan for casual cash gifts at New Year, as thank-you money, or for small allowances. The Sanrio character illustrations use a hand-drawn line style rather than the polished digital look typical of licensed merchandise, giving each envelope a quieter, more personal quality. Each design's color palette is drawn directly from its character, so the envelope itself signals the character before the recipient even looks closely.
