Behind the Design

Private New Year cards (私製はがき, shisei hagaki) are an alternative to the lottery-numbered nengajo issued by Japan Post. Because they are not tied to the postal lottery system, designers have more freedom with materials and finishes, which is how foil stamping becomes possible.

This 2027 series from Furukawashiko applies a foil press to each design, adding a metallic shimmer that catches light in a way standard printing cannot. The eight designs span different New Year aesthetics: Lucky Cat and Camellia reference traditional Japanese good-fortune iconography, while the sheep designs (Mizuhiki Sheep, Parent and Child Sheep, Shimenawa Sheep, New Year Sheep, Lucky Sheep, and Auspicious Collection) are specific to the 2027 zodiac year. Mizuhiki refers to the decorative knotted cord used on formal Japanese gifts and envelopes, giving that variant a distinctly ceremonial feel.

Foil-stamped private New Year postcards for 2027, the Year of the Sheep. Each pack contains 3 cards with a single design, finished with a sparkling foil press for a more formal, luxurious look than standard postal-issued nengajo. Eight designs to choose from, ranging from classic lucky motifs to sheep-themed illustrations.
