Behind the Design

In Japan, the annual exchange of New Year's postcards (nengajo) is a deeply rooted custom, but stepping away from it requires a formal announcement. A nengajo-jimai card fills that role: sent in advance of the new year, it thanks the recipient for years of correspondence and gracefully signals that the exchange will not continue.

Furukawashiko developed this line of private-format postcards to give people more design options for that moment. The five designs for 2027, the Year of the Sheep, range from a traditional Mt. Fuji and lucky cat composition to text-forward layouts and illustrated floral wreaths, covering the range of formality that different relationships call for. The private postcard format (shisei nenga) is sized and designated for New Year's use and is processed through Japan Post at the same postage rate as a standard nengajo.
