Behind the Design

Noshi-bukuro are a formal style of Japanese envelope used for giving otoshidama (New Year gift money), traditionally more elaborate than everyday pochibukuro. The noshi motif originates from dried abalone strips once included in ceremonial offerings, and its inclusion signals that a gift is given with genuine sincerity.

Furukawashiko's version uses Mino Washi, a hand-crafted paper from Gifu Prefecture with over 1,300 years of history and UNESCO recognition as an intangible cultural heritage. The paper's natural texture lends a tactile weight that mass-produced envelopes can't replicate. Gold foil stamping is applied over designs drawn from auspicious imagery: plum blossoms, Mt. Fuji, gourds, and the sheep of the coming zodiac year. Each design is sized specifically to hold bills flat, which is considered the correct and respectful way to present money in Japanese gift-giving etiquette.

A formal New Year gift envelope made from Mino Washi, one of Japan's oldest and most celebrated traditional papers, with gold foil stamping for the 2027 Year of the Sheep. Each pack contains two envelopes sized to fit bills flat, no folding required. Seven designs are available, from classic Mt. Fuji motifs to mizuhiki-inspired patterns.
