Yuko Kurihara studied nihonga (Japanese-style painting) at the University of Tsukuba Graduate School before spending fifteen years as a graphic designer — a background that shows in her work's precision and composition. Her paintings focus on ordinary subjects: vegetables, fruits, flowers, fish. But she finds something unexpected in each of them. The papaya reveals a monochrome interior of pearl-like seeds. A jade-green pumpkin reads like a gemstone. Twelve cherries arranged like musical notes turn out to number fewer than expected. A sea turtle observed at the Enoshima Aquarium on a summer day becomes a study in light refracting off shell patterns through water.

The CWP (Creative Works Print) format was developed to do something a standard fine-art print cannot. After digital printing on Airlas paper, each poster is run through a specialist machine that deposits foil and transparent raised resin in precise registration with the image. The result is a surface with visible depth and tactile relief. The teak wood frames are natural material, so no two are identical in grain. The acrylic front panel can be unclipped entirely so viewers can run a finger across the foil and resin layers — a texture that does not exist in the original paintings. Each piece is signed and numbered by Kurihara, with a certificate of authenticity, and is limited to 300 copies.
