Yuko Kurihara trained in Japanese painting at the University of Tsukuba before spending fifteen years as a graphic designer. When she returned to painting full time, she brought both traditions with her: the meticulous, layered approach of nihonga and the compositional eye of commercial design. Her work has since appeared on packaging for a long-established confectionery brand, in key visuals for Mitsukoshi Department Store gift campaigns, and as permanent installations at Hyatt Centric Kanazawa.

The two posters in this CWP series each carry their own story. "popcorn" began as a playful observation: dried hydrangeas that looked uncannily like popcorn kernels. Kurihara leaned into it, painting them against a backdrop of cinema-popcorn-container stripes and pairing their soft organic forms with the hard gloss of a glass vase. "March Water" came to her during the difficult early months of the pandemic, when a bossa nova song of the same name drifted out of a radio mid-session. The image of fish moving calmly through cold water, with spring light promised on the other side of winter, gave the work its title and its mood.

TOUCH & FLOW's CWP (Creative Works Print) project reproduces each original through careful platemaking and material selection, here using pearl-finished Curious Metal paper that adds a faint shimmer and a near-tactile texture to the surface. The result sits somewhere between a mass-produced print and a handmade object, which is part of what the edition number and artist signature are there to acknowledge.
