Most double-sided pencil cases add bulk on both sides, which means the case rocks on the desk and the back gets caught on everything in a bag. The Kodawari case solves this by keeping the back completely flat: a single, uninterrupted pocket that holds thin items flush against the surface.

The front is organized around a primary school schedule, which runs through six periods and requires at least six pencils. The pen holder is sized for exactly that, with an 18cm ruler fitting neatly underneath. A pencil sharpener is recessed into the front so there is no separate piece to lose. The faux leather exterior is hand-sewn at the seams rather than bonded, which keeps the edges from peeling at stress points.
