The ippo! series was built around one observation: standard pencils are too long for the hands of children in the first and second years of elementary school. At 161mm, the ippo! pencil sits about 14mm shorter than a typical pencil, making it easier for small hands to control without the barrel tilting or slipping.

The triangular shaft addresses a second challenge: young children learning to hold a pencil for the first time. The three wide flat sides encourage the thumb, index, and middle fingers to settle naturally into the correct position, reducing the need for constant correction. The wood end is rounded rather than cut square, removing the sharp edge that can catch on hands or paper.

The set includes one red pencil with a standard hexagonal shaft, used by students and teachers alike for marking. The Kids Design Award 2010 recognized the series for its child-centered engineering approach. Two patterned barrel designs (Pattern A and Pattern B) are offered alongside a plain version for students who prefer a simpler look.
