The ippo! Grip pencil was designed around a problem common in early childhood education: children often grip pencils incorrectly, and sweaty hands make the problem worse. Tombow addressed both issues in a single product.

The barrel is coated with micro-particles that create a fine, tactile texture across the surface. Unlike smooth lacquered pencils that slip under pressure, this coating gives fingers something to hold onto without requiring extra force. The result is more stable line control and less hand fatigue during long writing sessions.

The holding guide dots are placed at precise positions on the barrel, corresponding to where the thumb, index finger, and middle finger should rest for a correct tripod grip. Children simply place their fingers on the dots, removing the guesswork from a skill that typically takes months to develop through verbal instruction alone.

Two barrel shapes are offered: triangular, which naturally encourages correct finger placement by limiting how the hand can rotate around the barrel, and hexagonal, the standard shape most schools use. The natural wood-grain finish works for both boys and girls, and each pencil includes a name-writing space for classroom identification.
