Behind the Design

The Takashima almanac (Takashima-reki) is a Japanese fortune-telling system dating back to the Edo period, credited to the diviner Takashima Kaemon. It combines traditional Chinese almanac philosophy with Japanese sensibility, offering guidance on auspicious and inauspicious days for major life events and everyday decisions.

Shin Nihon Calendar's Nengkan Kaiun-reki series translates this tradition into a text-based wall calendar format. Rather than abstract symbols, each date carries printed annotations derived from the almanac, so the guidance is readable at a glance. The calendar measures a generous 535 x 380mm when open, giving enough space for the daily text without crowding.
