Echizen, in Fukui Prefecture, has been producing washi paper since before the 6th century, making it one of Japan's oldest and most respected papermaking regions. The paper used in this calendar is not a stock material: a dedicated batch is produced in Echizen each year specifically for this calendar, ensuring the weight, texture, and absorbency are matched to the silk-screen printing process.

Silk-screen printing is applied by hand-drawn stencil, which allows the ink to sit on the surface of the washi in a way that offset printing cannot replicate. Gold passes are added on top, catching light differently from the base colors. The result is that each sheet reads as an object in its own right, not just a calendar page.

For the 2027 edition, MIDORI moved from a hand-torn edge finish to a clean cut and added a pre-punched hanging hole with a cord included, making display more straightforward without altering the character of the paper itself. The twelve flower motifs cycle through Japan's botanical calendar, from winter camellia to December nandina.
