Behind the Design

Japan's standardized map symbols have been regulated by the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, and many of them carry surprisingly deep historical roots. The pickaxe crossed over a mine shaft, the torii gate for a shrine, the swastika-like manji for a Buddhist temple: each symbol distills a concept into a single mark that fits on a 1:25,000 topographic sheet.

Tokyo Cartographic designed this desk mat to keep those 90 symbols within arm's reach during school study sessions, printed flat on PET-laminated paper in A4 landscape so it doubles as a writing surface. Flipping it over reveals the etymology behind each symbol, turning a geography reference tool into a small lesson in how cartographic shorthand evolved.

An A4 desk mat printed with 90 types of Japanese map symbols, with the origins of each symbol explained on the reverse. Kids use it to study; adults use it to remember what that little crossed-pickaxe symbol actually meant.
