The Day Length Calendar starts from a simple observation: the amount of daylight changes every single day, yet most calendars treat each date as an identical block. MIDORI's designers mapped the actual hours of daylight for each day of the year and encoded that data as a color gradation printed directly on each monthly sheet.

The gradation palette draws from sunset tones, so the shift from the short days of winter to the long, bright days of summer reads as a visual warmth moving across the page. By December the colors return to cooler, quieter hues. Cream paper was chosen over bright white because it softens the pastel gradations and sits more naturally on a wall without competing with surrounding objects.

The inclusion of moon phases, the 24 solar terms from the traditional East Asian lunisolar calendar, and zassetsu markers (the seasonal transition days like Setsubun and Doyo) reflects a design intent to connect the calendar to natural cycles rather than just administrative dates. The result is a calendar that functions as a slow record of the year's rhythm.
