Behind the Design

Disposing of a snap-off blade safely usually means finding a separate blade snapper, which is rarely at hand when you need it. OLFA designed the DA-1 to remove that friction entirely by integrating the snapper directly into the back of the cutter body.

The snapper pulls away from the body with one tug on the marked tab, snaps the blade cleanly at the score line, and clips back into place. It holds about two small blades internally before you need to empty it, so casual users can go a long time between disposal trips. The auto-lock slider keeps the blade retracted when not in use, and the symmetrical grip works in either hand. The design earned a Good Design Award, recognition that the integration solved a real ergonomic problem rather than just bundling two objects together.

The DA-1 combines a small auto-lock cutter knife and a blade snapper into a single body, so you never need a separate disposal tool. The snapper detaches and reattaches with one touch, holds about two spent blades, and keeps the whole process contained wherever you are cutting.
