OLFA, the company that invented the snap-off blade cutter in 1956, applies the same thinking to its mats: protect the blade, not just the surface beneath it. The 135B uses a three-layer PVC construction where a rigid core is sandwiched between two softer outer layers. When a blade enters, the soft surface gives slightly, reducing impact on the cutting edge and extending blade life compared with harder mat materials.

Both sides are fully functional rather than one being decorative. The neutral color pairing, soft gray and brown, keeps the mat visually calm so pencil marks and cut lines read clearly against the surface. The 1cm grid with size reference marks for common paper formats (postcard through A3) eliminates the need for a separate measuring step when trimming to standard sizes.

The mat is made predominantly from recycled PVC and meets Japan's Green Purchasing Law requirements, which set minimum recycled-content thresholds for government procurement. One care note: the mat is PVC, so avoid heat sources, prolonged angled storage, and alcohol or solvent-based cleaners, all of which can warp the layers or lift the printed grid.
