About the Postcard

As suggested by the title, this postcard imagines what it would be like to refresh yourself from the summer heat by jumping into an ice-cold cream soda. In Japan, “cream soda” refers to the dessert drink often served at kissaten, or Showa-era cafes, made of melon soda topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and, if you’re lucky, a cherry on the side.

Truthfully speaking, I’m a little put off by the neon-green color of the soda, but the striking color combination of this iconic ice cream float has always fascinated me and fans of Showa-era nostalgia. The illustration also features a halftone texture, a nod to the visual characteristics of old print advertising.
