Behind the Design

The Bettachi takes its name from the Japanese "bettachi" (別たち), a traditional single-bevel leather-cutting blade used in leatherworking and bookbinding. OLFA's take on the form brings the replaceable-blade philosophy the company is known for to a tool that has historically been sharpened and maintained by hand.

The 43mm blade is wide enough for long, controlled cuts through thick leather and resin sheet, and the alloy tool steel holds an edge well through those demanding materials. When the edge finally does go, the blade flips to its second position before replacement, so nothing is wasted. The included polypropylene blade cover keeps the exposed edge safe during storage, which matters with a blade this wide. The same cutting edge also works as a scraper, useful for lifting old adhesive or paint from a surface without switching tools.

The OLFA 56B Bettachi is a replaceable-blade leather knife with a 43mm wide blade designed for cutting, trimming, skiving, peeling, and scraping. Each blade has two usable positions, so you get more life out of every replacement, and swapping blades requires no tools at all.
