Behind the Design

Illustrator monpoche (Aya Uema) works primarily in fine line drawing, creating letter sets, stamps, and small goods that center on a retro, quietly whimsical world of animals. Her characters occupy small, everyday moments with an air of gentle mystery.

For this collaboration with TOUCH & FLOW, the choice of letterpress printing was deliberate: the technique captures the delicacy of monpoche's linework in a way offset printing cannot. At TOUCH & FLOW's factory in Nagareyama, each card is fed through a press that has been running for over 50 years, producing the characteristic debossed texture that makes letterpress cards tactile as well as visual.

The four designs, Bear Patisserie, Bear Cuckoo Clock, Mouse's Cake, and King's Grand Parade, are printed in a spare ink palette that leaves enough open space to color in by hand, turning a standard postcard into something made twice: once by the press, once by whoever picks up a pencil.

A collaboration between TOUCH & FLOW and illustrator monpoche (Aya Uema), these postcards are printed one by one on a 50-year-old letterpress at TOUCH & FLOW's own factory in Nagareyama. The raised, embossed texture is a direct result of that process, and each card can also be colored in like a coloring book.
