Behind the Design

The Art Touch project is TOUCH & FLOW's ongoing series of letterpress postcards made in collaboration with illustrators. For this edition, they worked with Kamome Kanagawa, an Aichi-born, Tokyo-based illustrator whose work spans magazines, advertising, and product design. Kamome created the original drawings using water-based ballpoint pens and brush pens, analog tools whose line quality translates naturally into the letterpress medium.

Letterpress printing presses type or a plate into the paper under pressure, leaving a slight deboss in the surface. On these cards, that texture is subtle but present. Kamome's characters, cats huddled together, a solitary owl, birds exchanging glances, carry a low-key humor that reads well in this format. The imagery is not decorative filler; each design has its own small narrative energy.

These postcards are a collaboration between TOUCH & FLOW and Tokyo-based illustrator Kamome Kanagawa, printed using traditional letterpress. Run your finger across the surface and you can feel the subtle impression left by the press, a texture that offset printing simply cannot replicate. Kamome's slightly absurdist cats, owls, and birds look like they are mid-conversation about something important.
