Echizen, a city in Fukui Prefecture, has produced washi paper for more than a thousand years. It remains one of Japan's most respected papermaking regions, and MIDORI commissions washi made specifically for this calendar each year, rather than sourcing from existing stock.

The animal designs are drawn with attention to each creature's characteristic posture and gesture, one per month, printed onto the washi by silk-screen. The 2027 edition introduces a few refinements: the previous hand-torn edge finish has been replaced with a clean cut, a hole for string threading is now punched in at the factory, and the string comes attached. The postcard watermark from earlier editions has also been removed, giving each sheet a cleaner face.
