The WRITING MAT is part of KYOEI PLASTIC's Kiwami series, a line built around the idea that the surface beneath your paper matters as much as the paper itself. Most writing pads are plain or lightly textured, but the Kiwami takes a different approach: grid lines are hand-printed by artisans directly onto a soft, flexible PVC surface, giving you a visible reference for centering and aligning characters without needing graph paper underneath.

The material is a specially processed recycled PVC with an anti-slip finish that holds paper in place and prevents pen tips from catching or dragging. At 2.0mm thick, it has enough give to absorb pen pressure, which smooths out variation in hand force and reduces fatigue over long writing sessions. The jet-black pear-skin matte finish was chosen because pen and pencil marks show up less against it — so stray marks don't accumulate into visual clutter on the pad itself.

Each size is cut slightly larger than its corresponding paper standard, so the paper sits fully within the pad's surface area rather than hanging over the edge. The reversible design adds a second function: the plain back side has lower surface friction, which reduces bleed-through when the pad is used as a backing sheet during photocopying or scanning.
