Behind the Design

The Cornell Method was developed in the 1950s by Walter Pauk, a professor at Cornell University, as a structured approach to note-taking that encourages active review rather than passive transcription. The system splits each page into three distinct zones: a wide note-taking column on the right for capturing information in real time, a narrower keyword column on the left for writing cues and questions after the fact, and a summary box at the bottom for distilling the page's key ideas.

Gakken Sta:Ful built this structure directly into the page layout so the columns are pre-printed and proportioned to the method's specifications. A printed usage guide on the inside front cover walks through how to use all three zones, which means the notebook works as a self-contained introduction to the system. Three ruling options accommodate different handwriting sizes and use cases, and four cover colors differentiate notebooks at a glance when stacking them on a desk.

The Cornell Method divides each page into three zones: a main note area, a keyword column, and a summary strip at the bottom. Developed at Cornell University in the 1950s, it's one of the few note-taking systems with research behind it, and this notebook makes the layout ready to use without any setup.
