Behind the Design

The Animal Parade series began as a collaboration with Osaka-based illustrator Ryoji Nakajima, whose work is defined by a simple, graphic quality that reads as charming to children and adults alike. Over the past decade the series expanded across a wide range of stationery items, building a following large enough that RYU-RYU ran an Instagram popularity vote to decide which animals would appear in the 10th anniversary lineup.

These mini card sets are sized to slip inside a gift bag or tie onto a wrapped present rather than travel through the post. The tactile paper stock and black foil finish keep the designs from tipping into overtly cute territory, landing instead at something closer to considered and quietly playful. The envelope interiors are lined with brown kraft paper, so even opening the envelope has a bit of texture to it.

Five cards and five envelopes per set, each featuring black foil animal illustrations on textured paper. The designs come from Ryoji Nakajima's Animal Parade series, which turns 10 in 2024, and the animals were chosen by fan vote on RYU-RYU's Instagram.
