Behind the Design

The Animal Adventure Club series places animals in the middle of outdoor pursuits: polar bears on mountain trails, penguins by the water, bears at camp, and a polar bear and rabbit on the sports field. Illustrator Ryoji Nakajima drew each scene with point illustrations scattered across both the writing paper and envelopes, so the theme carries through the whole set.

The two-paper system is a quiet bit of design thinking. A standard sheet and a die-cut sheet sit together, and layering them creates a composite scene rather than a blank page. The envelope takes a similar approach to the ordinary tuck flap: a zipper tab runs along the seal, and pulling it opens the envelope cleanly while revealing an illustration underneath.
