PERPANEP is KOKUYO's series built around the relationship between paper and pen. The name reflects that premise: paper and pen, together. Each notebook in the series is designed around a distinct paper texture, with the idea that different surfaces bring out different qualities in the same ink or lead.

This Rough Texture (Zarazara) variant uses a woodfree base paper that has been intentionally left with a coarse, unsmoothed surface and finished firm throughout. The result is a paper that grips the pen slightly, slowing the stroke just enough to feel deliberate, while still allowing the nib or tip to glide without catching. Because the surface is irregular, ink settles unevenly at a microscopic level, which produces visible shading variation, especially noticeable with fountain pens and brush pens.

German binding was chosen for the cover construction because it allows the notebook to lie completely flat when open and to fold fully back on itself without the spine creating a raised ridge. The hard cover survives the repeated 360-degree flex that softer bindings would not.
