Thread-sewn binding was chosen specifically because it holds up to daily use while still opening flat without resistance, something that adhesive-bound hardcovers frequently fail to do over time. The matte vinyl cloth exterior carries a leather-like texture that reads as serious without the cost or upkeep of genuine leather, and the three-sided edge dyeing, which shifts color depending on the ruling, keeps the object from feeling purely utilitarian.

The diagonal elastic closure was designed to sit across the corner rather than straight across the spine, so it can cradle a pen without the band interfering with the cover's opening.
