Behind the Design

Sanuki udon is the soul food of Kagawa Prefecture on Shikoku Island, and the prefecture takes its udon seriously enough to be nicknamed "Udon Prefecture." Marumo Printing collaborated directly with eight local restaurants to photograph their actual menu dishes and turn those images into memo pads.

Each 75 × 75 mm pad shows a real bowl from a real restaurant. On the back, the restaurant name and dish are listed so the pad doubles as a low-key travel prompt. Some dishes are seasonal, so the menu details reflect the time of production and may have since changed. Designs span a range of classic preparations: kake, bukkake, kamatama, hiyahiya, and regional variations like sudachi-spiked cold udon from Yoshiya or matsutake udon from Hisaeda.

Each pad in this series features an actual menu photo from a famous Sanuki udon restaurant in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan. The restaurant name and dish are printed on the back, so you can visit in person and order the exact bowl on your notes.
