Behind the Design

Marumo Printing developed the Maru Memo as a showcase of what a small print shop could do beyond conventional rectangular notepads. Producing a clean, perfectly circular memo block requires precise cutting and binding techniques that aren't common outside professional bookbinding, so the format itself became a demonstration of craft.

The Nordic Plate Collection takes that circular format a step further by treating both sides of the pad as part of the design. The top sheet carries a Scandinavian-inspired pattern, while the back of the pad mimics the unglazed base ring found on ceramic plates, giving the object a tactile, three-dimensional reference even though it's made entirely from paper. Because the motifs are radially symmetrical, there's no single correct way to orient the pad when writing, which removes the small friction of always aligning a notepad before you start.

A circular memo pad shaped and printed to look like a Nordic-style plate, right down to the stamped ring on the back. Because the design has no fixed top or bottom, you can write in any direction without rotating the pad, a trick made possible by the bookbinding methods of professional printing craftsmen.
