The Silhouette Message Pad came from a simple question: what if a single sheet of writing paper could hold a surprise? Marumo Printing applied their die-cutting expertise to a standard ippisho (one-line letter pad) format, making a precise cut in the upper-right corner of each sheet. At rest, the pad looks like any other writing paper with a color-gradient background. Fold that corner up, and a small illustrated silhouette lifts off the surface, held upright by the paper itself.

The shadow the raised shape casts onto the sheet below is part of the effect. It shifts as the light changes, giving the note a quiet, three-dimensional presence that flat printing cannot replicate. Because the illustration occupies only the corner, it leaves the rest of the sheet free for writing, so the design and the message coexist rather than compete.

Four designs are available, each named with the kind of phrase you might write at the top of a letter: "To the Town Where You Live," "See You Tomorrow," "The Tree of Promises," and "Night of Departure." The titles do some of the emotional work before a single word is written.
