Behind the Design

Most die-cut memo pads are cut into a shape at the pad level, but the sheets themselves tear out as rectangles. The Detach Memo Pad takes the concept a step further: perforations follow the actual outline of each illustration, so when you tear a sheet away, the note itself holds the shape. A speech bubble sheet can be stuck directly onto a product as a hand-written POP tag, or tucked into a notebook page as an accent. A feather or cat note carries its form even after it leaves the pad.

Marumo Printing, a small letterpress-rooted printer based in Japan, produced this series with a focus on the tactile moment of separation. The ruled lines on the back keep the sheets functional for actual writing, so the shape is a design decision, not a novelty trade-off.
