Behind the Design

Standard binder clips do one job well: they hold pages together. But the moment someone picks up a clipped document and starts reading, the clip's rigid rectangular arms cut across the corner and interrupt the natural flipping motion.

The Smart Double Clip was born from a shift in perspective: what if you designed not just for the person assembling the document, but for the person receiving and reading it? By reshaping the clip to match the triangular space that forms at the page corner during a turn, KOKUYO turned a friction point into a functional guide. The triangular profile aligns with the page rather than fighting it.

Originally submitted as a concept for the KOKUYO Design Award 2018, where it earned the Excellence Prize, the Smart Double Clip went on to full commercialization. It is a small object with a specific, well-defined problem to solve.

A binder clip redesigned around the way people actually read documents. Its triangular form fits into the corner margin that naturally forms when you turn a page, so instead of getting in the way, it acts as a guide. Winner of the KOKUYO Design Award 2018 Excellence Prize.
