Behind the Design

Sode no Shita Dokokai (Under-the-Sleeve Fan Club) is a sub-brand by Kinokosya, built entirely around Japanese idioms for unofficial payments. "Sode no shita" literally means "under the sleeve" and is a classic expression for slipping someone a bribe. The series leans into this with deadpan sincerity: every design name is a different term for a questionable exchange, from "Nekobaba" (pocketing something you found) to "Kuchidome-ryo" (hush money) to "Amai Shiru" (sweet nectar, a softer word for a kickback).

The pochi bags are flat hira-bukuro style, sized to hold a bill folded in thirds, so they function exactly as the names imply. The memo pads use glassine paper and risograph printing, a process known for ink variation, slight colour unevenness, and registration shifts that give each sheet a handmade, retro character. The series debuted at Bungu Joshi Haku 2025 (Stationery Girls Expo 2025).

A humor-first stationery series built around bribery, hush money, and under-the-table gifts. The flat pochi bags fit bills folded in thirds, and the memo pads are risograph-printed on glassine paper for that characteristically uneven, analog look. Every design name is a Japanese slang term for some kind of suspicious transaction.
