Behind the Design

Kinokosya builds each memo pad around a fictional world rather than a surface aesthetic. The Showa-era retro look comes from the storytelling layer: a stamp brand called Gu-Insha, a cinema called Yume Kinema, a bathhouse stationery line (Sento Shuwa-Shuwa), a festival stall (Bon-Bon Stationery), a sunset post office (Yuuyake Yuubinkyoku). Each design is its own small universe, and the memo pad is a piece of ephemera from inside that world.

Risograph printing reinforces this. The process uses drum-based stencils and semi-water-based ink, printing one color at a time. The result is analog by nature: ink bleeds slightly into paper, colors shift between prints, and registration isn't always exact. These aren't flaws. They're the signature of the process, and they're why risograph-printed goods look the way they do. Paper choices vary by design, with straw paper (wara hanshi) adding a rougher, more tactile surface to select pads.

Each pad in this collection is printed using a risograph, a stencil-based process that layers one ink color at a time and produces intentional bleeding, color shifts, and misregistration. The designs don't imitate retro; they're built around fictional Showa-era worlds: a bathhouse stationery line, a sunset post office, a triangle lottery stall, and more. Every pad comes individually packaged with its own product tag.
