Kinokosya (also known as Secret Society MemoMa, or 秘密結社メモマ) built this tape series around a single frustration: standard washi and masking tapes repel water-based ink, making them useless as actual memo surfaces. The solution was a dedicated coating applied to the washi base that lets ballpoint ink adhere cleanly, turning each strip into a writable label, note card, or planner insert.

The Retro Series leans into a distinctly Japanese nostalgia aesthetic, drawing motifs from everyday cultural touchstones: the steamy calm of a sento bath house, the festival joy of yo-yo fishing, the ritual of a loyalty stamp card, the faded charm of a retro cafe menu. Each design is part of the original Secret Society MemoMa story concept, a tongue-in-cheek world where a secret society exists solely to champion the humble memo.

Beyond the design story, the tape is engineered for actual use. Hand-tearable perforations eliminate the need for scissors, and the repositionable adhesive means a note stuck to a diary page today can move to a gift tag tomorrow. The result is a consumable that sits somewhere between functional stationery and collectible art object.
