Behind the Design

Mino Washi is a handmade Japanese paper produced in Mino City, Gifu Prefecture, with a history spanning over 1,300 years. It was designated a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2014. The paper is known for its fine, even texture and subtle warmth, qualities that translate naturally into a book cover material.

This series pairs that traditional material with illustrations by Aya Inoue, an artist known for soft, detailed depictions of Western sweets. The four designs, Victoria Cake, Parfait, Sundae, and Trifle, each carry a distinct palette while sharing the same lace-like surface texture. The result is a cover that references both Japanese craft and European confectionery in the same quiet object.

A book cover made from Mino Washi, one of Japan's oldest papermaking traditions, printed with sweets illustrations by artist Aya Inoue. Each design pairs a lace-like washi texture with dessert motifs like Victoria cake and parfait, so the cover itself becomes part of the reading experience.
