The H-DM was designed around a simple problem: most marking tools for industrial and craft use are wasteful, requiring you to discard the entire instrument when the core runs out. Tombow's solution was to apply the same retractable mechanism found in quality pencil holders to a wax-based crayon core, producing a twist-out marker that works across an unusually wide range of surfaces.

The 4.4mm core sits inside a PVC barrel that protects it during storage and retracts cleanly when not in use. Because the core is a separate PS resin cartridge, you swap only the spent core rather than replacing the whole tool. The refill system also means you can keep one black holder loaded with a yellow core for high-contrast marking on dark materials, mixing holder color and core color independently.
